Paulineplusluis, awarded the Design of the Year 2024 title, create functional pieces that, without denying their utility, show the beauty of details.
Pauline Capdo and Luis Bellenger, both industrial designers, are originally from the French regions of Les Landes and Normandy. Their paths crossed in 2011, while studying at the Institut Saint-Luc in Tournai. Their professional adventure began at school where they discovered their shared interest for lighting. After obtaining a master's degree in industrial design at La Cambre, they decided to combine their talents and set up their own studio: paulineplusluis. Winning the MAD Surprize! Young Belgian Design award marked the founding of the studio in 2015. The duo made its name at prestigious fairs such as the Salone Satellite in Milan, which opened the door to international recognition and attracted the attention of publishers. In 2024, they joined the MAD Incubator and were named Designer of the Year by the magazines Knack Weekend and Le Vif Weekend.
“For us, everyday elements are an obvious source of inspiration—a piece of architecture seen with fresh eyes, where it might otherwise blend into the background of routine.”
Pauline and Luis embody a creative alchemy born from their shared passion for design. Their primary focus is on lighting design. Light as a creative playground for exploring atmospheres and shapes as well as the way they interact with the environment. By dedicating themselves to lighting design, the studio opens up to the infinite possibilities offered by the intangible, creating objects that can transform a space simply through their presence. This freedom allows them to go beyond traditional design constraints, reinventing classic typologies with simple materials and ingenious solutions. In their quest for innovation, they try to rework existing objects. Like the Néon collection, made from cables and wires used in the construction industry. It is a process that allows them to reinvent what already exists, resulting in luminaires that combine functionality and aesthetics. Each lamp by the designer duo is more than a source of light. It is a creative approach that combines functionality, accessibility and a subtle touch of poetry.
Next to their collaborations with publishers and renowned brands such as Habitat, Serax, and Deknudt Mirrors, paulineplusluis has a preference for self-production. This duality creates a balance between commercial demands and Pauline and Luis' desire to remain rooted in small-scale, independent productions. It gives them the freedom to explore other production processes, diversify their offer and attract a different clientele. This while maintaining total control of the designprocess from A to Z for a more flawless production. More recently, Paulineplusluis started to work on custom-made projects that oscillate between design and architecture. For example, they designed the furniture for the reception area of the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles in Paris. Bespoke projects like these add a new dimension to their practice.
Pauline and Luis prefer intuition to the digital process. They bring their ideas to life through models and sketches rather than 3D renderings. Their approach can be summarised as a search for simplicity, where every detail has been thought through and every material carefully chosen. At the intersection of industrial design and visual poetry, their objects are both functional answers and high-level solutions to our everyday environment. Characterized by a clean aesthetic, clear lines, and a minimalist conceptual approach, their creations aim above all to capture the essence of simple objects. In addition, Pauline and Luis incorporate many architectural elements into their objects. The wall lamp Venice, for example, is made of a laser-cut aluminium sheet with slats delicately twisted to create subtle openings, evoking the effect of light filtering through Venetian blinds. ‘For many people it is an everyday element, but for us it is an obvious inspiration, an architectural detail that often blends into the space’. By blending creativity with pragmatism and combining the intuition of craftsmanship with the rigor of industrial processes, Paulineplusluis breathes new life into everyday objects. The aim is for the users to rediscover the environment and make everyday pieces their own.
